800 MHz Allocation for Mobile Broadband Announced

Rumours about spectrum decisions were confirmed by Ofcom a few days back when it officially declared that the 800 MHz band of broadband spectrum will be allocated to mobile broadband providers.

Other European nations have already released this spectrum for the purpose, and now the UK is following suit. The country will be able to reap this ‘digital dividend’ as moving over to digital TV will clear up the airwaves.

Smaller spectrum allocations were already in the government’s agenda in 2003, but the 800 MHz decision comes as a move to lay more emphasis on the development of mobile broadband. With nations like Germany, Spain, Finland, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Denmark already having mobile broadband running on the 800 MHZ spectrum, the UK is falling in line with other major developed countries.

With this new decision, companies can be expected to earn billions through competition, innovation and expansion. The consumers will thus get equipment at affordable prices (click for laptop deals) and services that are both competitive and technologically advanced. Also the use of mobile broadband will get a major boost with more people using the reasonably priced services.

The spectrum will be sold off to mobile broadband providers once it is cleared. However, the date of auctioning has not been finalized yet.
