Preferred Method of Mounting a Linear Scale

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Synopsis: A Linear Scale is used to provide a feedback of the displacement of any axis on a machine. The linear scale consists of two parts i.e. a) Scale which consists of a Glass or metallic plate with gratings on it, enclosed in a extruded channel usually made of aluminum. b) Scanner, which generates electrical signals when there is a displacement between the scale and scanner.

The scanner consists of signal processing electronics, which conditions the pulses generated for further processing by a CNC or other control and display electronics. Usually the scanner has all the electric connections and there is no connection to the scale.

Two ways of Fixing a Scale to a Slide: Whenever a scale/scanner combination is fixed to a linear slide, one of them is connected to a moving part, and the other to the stationary base of the slide.

Recession and Debt Consolidation

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Is debt consolidation the number one financial solution for me? Being in a recession (according to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club Autumn forecast), it’s urgent that people with financial problems realise the differences between debt consolidation loans and the other available debt solutions – and realise which one might be the best solution for them.

First of all, it hangs on what happens in the future. In a recession, it’s more likely than usual to be not so good news – when consumer spending drops and companies make a loss, many businesses will resort to redundancies just so they can stay afloat. For anyone who’s got an idea their company is thinking about making some staff redundant, consolidating their debts might not be the best idea.

Why is that? One of debt consolidation’s best benefits is the ability to lower the monthly amount an individual pays towards their debt repayments. A consolidation loan is most effective when the individual is in a reasonably stable financial situation: when they are aware how much they’re making and how much they’re spending each month, they are able to figure out the ideal way of repaying their debt.

So someone facing the possibility of unemployment could be better off looking into debt management, rather than consolidating their debts. Debt management gives a flexible approach to debt: borrowers are allowed to ask debt management experts to get in contact with their creditors on their behalf, asking them to think about accepting lower monthly payments, waive charges and/or freeze interest.

Individual Voluntary Arrangements require a high level of commitment and need people with their own homes to release some of the cash tied up in their property. Borrowers must be able to commit to making fixed monthly payments for (normally) six years, based on the maximum they are able to afford once they’ve taken their essential monthly costs into account. Even so, an IVA is able to make all the difference – for people whose debts have slowly become out of control, as well as people faced with a severe fall in income. Of course, Individual Voluntary Arrangements do need a level of financial stability: if the individual doesn’t feel they could commit to five years of regular payments, an Individual Voluntary Arrangement may not be the best debt solution for them.

Michigan’s B&K Corporation Profiled in InMFG Magazine

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Since 1952, B&K Corp. has been designing and building assembly and test systems for the automotive industry. Six years ago the firm was purchased by a German organization, IWKA, which is an international network of nearly one hundred mid-sized companies. B&K is currently part of the IWKA Powertrain Manufacturing Group and customers include Harley Davidson, Nissan, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, Allison Transmissions and many other automotive top tier clients. B&K does not manufacture simple products; in fact the products are quite complex, taking six months to a year to produce. The price tag for complete system ranges from half a million dollars to $2.5 million. Recently, the company received its largest order, worth over $20 million. The Saginaw, Michigan facility manufactures the test equipment, and the Fenton, Michigan location builds the assembly equipment and completes the overall system.

According to Thomas R Cutler, author of the feature article, InMFG Magazine (http://www.reedlink.com/SingleArticle~ContentId~57401~pub~IP.htm l) focuses on Encompix ETO (Engineer-to-Order) ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) Manufacturing Software and B&K Corporation.

B&K CEO, Scott Orendach, noted the increasing challenge of global competition, “The marketplace has become far more global. We are dealing with competitors in Europe and in Asia. Our customers are looking for suppliers that have common manufacturing practices all around the globe, so we are now facing some pretty serious competition. We have currencies working both for us and against us. All of these things put pressure on B&K to address its cost issues, and standardize and modularize its products.”

B&K identified that the new system allowed the business to move towards standardization. B&K was especially pleased with “The Item Master” in the new ERP system, “It plays a central role in this initiative. We used to have a cultural problem with our engineering department towards standardization and modular design. We also needed to control our raw material costs and purchasing; we can now look at historical pricing so that we know when we’re are getting the best buy.”

Encompix has filled the manufacturing software requirements of Engineer-to-Order companies since 1992. The company name reflects the commitment to developing business application solutions that encompass the complex areas of project-based and job-based manufacturing.

5 Tips To Finding The Best Cell Phone

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Buying a cell phone for the first time or the 7th time or whatever, using these tips can help us make a better decision on the best personal choice for our cell phones.

1. What features to choose?:

No matter now cool a cell Phone looks is only part of what You may really want or need in the phone You choose. There is a lot of flashy advertising and friends that have all types. Consider Your needs first when looking into the features available. The Following are some cell phone options to consider:

-E911 (enhanced 911) -battery life -camera -e-mail -size and weight -screen size/color – Radio -MP3 Player -voice commands – speaker phone(clarity) -to -do lists -calendar/organizer -accessories(het sets, face plates, ring tones, screen savers) -dual mode -key pad -band support -messaging (MMS, SMS) -design (many styles)

Once You’ve narrowed down the choices to a few models, research a little more into reviews on each one and see what other consumers have found.

2. Shop around for savings.

Sometimes buying direct from a company instead of 3rd party can prove to save money. Be sure the phone is warrantied and covered by who sells it to you. Sometimes an unlocked phone that is also compatible with other carriers can be a good deal at times too.

3.Rebates

If You are looking to really save with your budget, See what promotions are going and if one company may match the deal of another but perhaps have some feature you like better. There are often rebate offers that can make the cell phone free with a membership sign up. Consider if you think it will be valuable in the long run.

4. Check the fine Print

Sometimes the small print will throw in an unexpected activation fee or something that is easy to miss. This can make what looks like a great deal really not be so great after all. See small print as well for Warrantee discrepancies.

5. Choose a Good Service Plan

There are more than 60 different plans to check out. These Plans are comparable on the Internet. It is always better to overestimate your usage needs than be short and pay extra fees or be without service when you need it. Travelers can benefit from a National or international Plan.

These are a few tips to consider and should help you arrive at a successful decision on the right Cell Phone and Plan For Your needs!

Aluminum Oxide to Disrupt Laser Weapons

Monday, October 27th, 2008

In a defensive move to eliminate communication of an enemy, an offensive system using a chemical laser would be a good idea. In manufacturing we have lasers, which coat materials so they can be combined or heat-treated in the application process. This process of depositing coatings by lasers is known in manufacturing as Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) is a generative laser process.

http://www.manufacturingtalk.com/news/tru/tru173.html

With an airborne chemical laser you could coat the enemies communications, such as antenna, laser optical components with aluminum oxide dust.

http://www.eoc-inc.com/lbp/contamination.pdf

By contaminating out bound CO2 lasers or Argon Laser components with aluminum oxides our enemy will be unable to fire upon our aircraft, UAVs, Smart Flying Technologies or incoming weapons. Once the enemy is rendered without defense a small time period could be given for surrender or submission of our political will in exchange for being spared the destructive issues, which come with war. Perhaps this might be a last chance to overt war and although it could further complicate Boyd’s ‘OODA Loop’ it would also be quite benevolent in the events leading up to our beyond limited war. As the enemy’s options are eliminated in a pre-chaos and confusion added step, our ability to negotiate a favorable settlement before surgical removal of those who wish us or our allies ill will.

A small UAV could be employed to sprinkle aluminum oxide dust by way of a small fire cracker type system which would explode near the laser from a single mission UAV or MAV. Another possibility would be a directed discharge of a laser beam for a couple of seconds from the UAV as the last event of that robotic mechanism.

Once coated the laser would not function correctly, antennas and radar would not function correctly. If the enemy failed to comply then another chemical or heat laser could be sent onto the surface and cause additional havoc.

Verizon Missing Out on Customers by not Allowing Third Party

Third Party Mobile Content Prized by Cell Phone Users

By Anthony Wayne

Atlantic City, NJ – For years, the nation’s largest cellular carrier, Verizon, has operated with a “walled garden” approach to mobile data services, meaning that it would not permit downloads of independent content to its customers. The walled garden, however, may soon fall down.

A recent survey by Handango found that third-party applications had a “strong influence” or “somewhat of an influence” on 69 percent of consumers’ decisions to choose their carriers and phone models. The survey of over 14,000 mobile content users found that the ability to utilize third-party content was a “powerful influencer” in mobile phone decision making. The survey also suggests that users of mobile content are more satisfied and less likely to change brands or carriers.

Up until now, Verizon and Sprint have maintained their networks solely for its own mobile data content. This also applied to the third-party use of premium SMS. Industry analysts, however, are now speculating that Verizon and then Sprint may soon permit the use of premium SMS services on its network for third party content. Apparently, the carriers are starting to realize that by not offering this service, it is akin to possibly losing millions of potential customers.

According to the Cool Ringtones Blog (http://www.coolringtones.blogspot.com), a blog site that reports on the mobile ringtone industry, long time ringtone provider Ringingphone (http://www.ringingphone.com) is now providing ringtones and cellular wallpapers to Verizon customers. It is believed that this is the first instance where an independent ringtone provider has begun selling ringtones and wallpapers to Verizon customers.

Perhaps the walled garden has already crashed down.

Changes in the Construction Business

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I work at a big home improvement store. We carry building supplies, hardware, plumbing supplies, flooring supplies, paint, garden supplies. While most of our customers have traditionally been professionals in the building and construction business, we also have a lot of do it yourself supplies for consumers interested in home improvement projects. That part of our business has been growing this year, so we’ve been adjusting our inventory accordingly. We are also offering more home improvement workshops in the store. They’re becoming very popular, and they are really helping to boost product sales. We are located in an area of the country that has really been hit hard by credit problems and it’s no surprise that new construction has fallen off. The housing market has suffered badly.

These days, homeowners are more likely to fix up what they have, rather than try to buy new homes. Our professional customers are also doing more home repairs and renovations, rather than building new houses and commercial property. We have several more stores in the city, and they all report the same trend. Our business hasn’t suffered much, but it’s changed somewhat to reflect the times. We just have to be adaptable and patient.

Lugh Long Arm

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Lugh is a sun-god before he became the Milesian or De Danaan person who this story is about. At Inyo near Bishop California a fellow researcher named Rod Schmidt has a pre-Christian Lugh petroglyph.

“LUGH LONG-ARM
Now is a good time to tell the story of Lugh or Lug and the Tuatha de Danaan meeting with Eochaid who most say was Fir Bolg and some say may have been Milesian while others might say was a Fomorian.

“And there were then two doorkeepers at Tara, namely Gamal son of Figal and Camall son of Riagall. When one of these was on duty he saw a strange company coming towards him. A young warrior fair and shapely, with a king’s trappings, was in the forefront of that band. They told the doorkeeper to announce their arrival at Tara. The doorkeeper asked: ‘Who is there?’

‘Here there is Lug Lamfada (i.e. Lug Long-Arm) son of Cian son of Diancecht and of Ethne daughter of Balor. Fosterson, he, of Tailltiu daughter of Magmor king of Spain {Iberia} and of Eochaid the Rough son of Duach.’ (2)”

Doorkeep: ‘What art or expertise do you bring? Nobody without the sheepskin of the highest university will enter here.’ Following the policy of all good administrations that seek to weed out those who might pretend to know and thus damage those who mistakenly think they are truly expert.

“Question me, kind sir. I am able to show the greatest arts of the doctor (leech, in his time)!” Lugh spoke with confidence and his fellows were aware this doorkeeper could not possibly ask relevant questions that would challenge the knowledge of their leader.

Doorkeep: ‘My good master and faithful Drucht is the best of that noble profession or guild and we have no need of more.’

“Good then, perhaps he would like to learn about the arts he can benefit your king by?” One of Lugh’s band spoke in a challenging manner.

“Seamus, There is no need to worry about whether or not their leech is able to address the complexities of the body and its humours… Do you think your king would like a champion?” Lugh flexed and stood straight.

Doorkeep: ‘Ogma is famous beyond the rising and setting sun. If you know anything you know of his merit. Are you ‘barbarians’?’

“Barbarians and experts are alike; they all come from far away with credentials and no detractors, proclaiming themself as wise or strong. Our Lugh has had such visit his court in lands far more ostentatious than this castle.” Seamas spoke with rising disdain for the bureaucrat who obviously had determined he was going to decide what only his king could determine.

“Allow me to engage the good man without further interjection, Seamas! We all know the importance of our mission and that failure to prove our merit with words might lead to having to use other means. Our Queen has instructed us to make every effort… Now, my good man, please forgive the tone and tenor of Seamas… He actually enjoys taking the heads off the best of champions when we meet them… Perhaps you have an opening for a Harper?”

‘Your company is beginning to wear upon me… We have Rhea of Bicelmos whom the faeries are beholden to.’ The doorkeep had moved to a safer position and made ready to deny entrance should they appear ready to move across the drawbridge.

Lugh was not tired or upset but could see this was not going to be easy to break through the defenses brought about by provincial ego and the arts of those who congratulate each other while never venturing out into the real world to find their match or metal. “Question me: I am a sorcerer and able to appear as the eagle or the fish.”

Doorkeep: ‘We need thee not… Many are those among us who have so studied and our folk of might are seldom bested by wizards from the land of Gaul near to your Iberia, if that is where you hail from.’

“We have been places you have never heard about except perhaps in the ‘Psaltair’ which you probably have read and wondered how could the earth be so incredibly immense… I see you have studied the art of the psychic and fancy yourself intuitive, through your non-verbal probing… I SEE also that you have difficulty imagining anyone can know so much… I know you have met people from near and far who come to our spiritual centerpiece of yore and think it is what it was before the ice did cover our homelands… I know you have not seen the likes of my torque and find my manner beyond belief… Perhaps there is something you yourself have heard about and yet have never seen done that I might do for you?”

Doorkeep: ‘It has been eons since those days you speak of. I am a man of breadth and learning beyond a mere sole disciplinarian who may know something well but know little just the same. In years of training before I achieved this high and respected position I thought there were no tellers of tales who could best me… Since the time I have been in this post I have often been proven wrong in that belief, and you are becoming quite high on the list of ‘fakirs’ and ‘claimants’ I have met. There is one thing that I have heard spoken about that I would like to see you do and yet have never seen it done…’

“Then you shall have it” Tell us what it is. ‘Seamas spoke with glee.

Doorkeep: ‘Dematerialization!’ The good man smiled broadly.

Lugh stood fast and raised his arms while beginning to turn. When he had completed three turns, he was no more visible. His own men were aghast but the doorkeep looked dryly into their presence and said:

‘Mind-fogging is an easy art… Perhaps one of you would take sword and pierce the place where Lugh was standing.’

“We have not seen him do this before and are not sure you are not right… He is our hero and historian, a poet and a smith, brazier and craftsman. We should not wish to lose his teaching.” Seamas spoke slowly as he put his hand on his sword.

Doorkeep: ‘It is as I had surmised…You are all just students on a jester’s quest… Be gone else I summon the guards!’

Among the group was a red-haired lass named Boadicaea whose nickname Bodacious was often heard on the lips of men who desired her favour. She drew her sword and stabbed the air in front of Seamas and wherever Lugh might seem to be in the eyes of the unbelieving bureaucrat. He was quite impressed and spoke softly. ‘I shall tell my king what has happened.’

Eochaid heard the tale and welcomed the de Danaan to his land. He made Lugh the Ard Ollam in charge of the Philosophies and Crafts. There had been no such chair seated in his court of that of many kings before him. Since the time of Myrddin of Wales (Merlin) none had dared to take this austere position. With the aid of the de Danaan Eochaid was able to unite all people in Erinn (Eire) under his rule and the legend of Lugh and his child Dagda grew to the state of demi-gods or superstars. The stories of their feats of legerdemain and chivalry still are unmatched. The doorkeep has been forgotten and his post has received less ‘dire fine’ or payment for a long time now.
